Pure alumina bearings with cementless stems versus sandwich bearings with cemented stems in total hip arthroplasty



BACKGROUND: Ceramic bearing surfaces have been introduced to prevent osteolysis after total hip arthroplasty (THA), but little is known about the difference in clinical and radiological results between Pure alumina and sandwich alumina bearings. The purpose of this study was to analyze the results obtained with third-generation alumina-on-alumina THA with two different designs both in liner and femoral stem fixation after a minimum follow-up of 4.2 years.



METHODS: The results of 195 primary alumina-on-alumina THAs in 167 patients were evaluated. The procedures were performed between January 1998 and October 2006. Three patients died and 11 patients were lost to follow-up, leaving a total of 153 patients (181 hips) available for study. In the 88 group A patients, 107 hips were implanted using pure alumina bearings with cementless femoral stems. These patients were followed for (6.84 ± 1.49) years. In the 65 group B patients, 74 hips were implanted using sandwich alumina ceramic bearings with cemented femoral stems. These patients had a follow-up period of (7.73 ± 1.60) years. Patients in both groups were evaluated clinically and radiographically.



RESULTS: One ceramic liner fracture occurred in group A and five took place in group B (P < 0.05), four of them revised for liner fracture. In each group, one acetabular shell migration happened without liner breakage and two hips developed deep infections, and all these six hips received revisions. Nine femoral components loosened in group B, with seven undergoing revisions. Kaplan-Meier survivorship at 5 years for revision of any component for any reason in group A was 96.26% compared to 90.54% in group B (P < 0.05). Better function was determined in group A (average Harris hip scores: 92.13 ± 2.85) than in group B (average Harris hip scores: 86.03 ± 4.21) and the difference was significant (P < 0.05). Squeaking was not recorded in either group.

Researchers of Shanghai Institute of Optical and Machinery under the Chinese Academy of Sciences have achieved a substantive progress in growing large sized sapphire crystal through the socalled temperature gradient technique (TGT), a panted technique. The said Sapphire crystal has a size large than 4 inches with its all four key performance indicators reaching the internationally advanced level.



The said technique has virtually landed a breakthrough in growing sapphire crystal, an internationally acknowledged technical puzzle and laid a fine foundation for the commercial production of large sized sapphire crystals. The comprehensive testing made by the California Institute of Technology has shown that the four technical performance indicators of the sapphire crystal grown under the temperature gradient technique were better than that produced through thermal exchange process in the US, reached an internationally advanced level.



The Institute has started the mass production of sapphire crystals and is planning to build a 2— inch sapphire crystal underlay production line, the first of its kind in the country and another 3 — inch sapphire crystal underlay production line, the first of its kind in the world. The successful industrialization of sapphire crystal production will make the products available for export to Japan, US, Germany and other countries.

As an angular, durable blasting abrasive, aluminum oxide (or aluminium oxide) can be recycled many times. It is the most widely used abrasive grain in sand blast finishing and surface preparation because of its cost, longevity and hardness. Harder than other commonly used blasting materials, Aluminum oxide grit powder penetrates and cuts even the hardest metals and sintered carbide.



Approximately 50% lighter than metallic media, aluminum oxide abrasive grain has twice as many particles per pound. The fast-cutting action minimizes damage to thin materials by eliminating surface stresses caused by heavier, slower cutting media.



Aluminum oxide grit powder has a wide variety of applications, from cleaning engine heads, valves, pistons and turbine blades in the aircraft industry to lettering in monument and marker inscriptions. It is also commonly used for matte finishing, as well as cleaning and preparing parts for metalizing, plating and welding. Aluminum oxide abrasive grain is the best choice for an abrasive sand blasting and polishing grain as well as for preparing a surface for painting.



As a premier aluminum oxide abrasive grain supplier, Kramer Industries recommends using virgin, brown aluminum oxide for optimal performance versus reprocessed or remanufactured product. Virgin, brown aluminum oxide contains less than 1.5% free silica and is therefore safer to use than sand. The grit size is consistent and cuts much faster than sand, leaving a smoother surface. Generally, the larger the grit size, the faster aluminum oxide will cut.

Harper International, world leader in thermal processing solutions for advanced materials, announced a new project with Orbite Aluminae Inc. for two high temperature systems in series for conversion of aluminum chloride hexahydrate crystals to High purity alumina (HPA).



Orbite conducted on-site testing at Harper’s Technology Research Center in exploration of the best furnace design to support the 99.99%+ purity goal of their game-changing technology. The resulting two systems include a Rotary furnace for removing volatiles (calcination) and a higher temperature Vertical furnace for phase transformation. Orbite’s material loses 80% mass as hydrochloric acid and water during the processing. In consideration of the corrosive by-products and high purity requirement, the first system is designed with a quartz tube and the second system has an alumina tube as the contact surface with the powder.



The systems will meet Orbite’s initial scale up goal for High purity alumina plant construction, expanding from their current small batch furnace. Harper’s expertise in supporting customers during scale-up of advanced materials processing is part of its Ignite? program.

The cross beam sensor adds another whole dimension to your triggering capability. This sensor was designed for triggering on flying insects or birds. For this application having a one dimensional trigger just won t get you that killer insect in flight picture. The cross beam sensor is available in two different versions - Laser and Infrared. Lasers are much more adept at capturing extremely small objects and are better for long distances. IR has the advantage of not having a visible beam. Pictured below is the laser sensor with the diffusers (included) installed on the receivers.



The cross beam sensor set is available with either infrared or laser transmitters. Each of the transmitter types has its own advantages depending on what type of subject you are trying to capture. The receivers for both sets are identical with exception of the front element on the receiver. This element is user replaceable. For the laser transmitter there is a diffuser/filter that is placed in front of the receiver. For the IR sensor the front element is left open. If you need both the laser and IR cross beam sets you can do this without purchasing two complete sets. You can purchase one set and then just the transmitters for the other.



The IR Cross Beam Sensor Set is the best choice for ballistics and indoor studio work. The IR transmitters have an invisible beam that has a larger beam width than the laser transmitters. The IR Cross Beam Sensor Set has a range of about 30cm without the IR lens assembly attached to the transmitters. With the included IR lens assembly the range is increased to about 2m. The IR sensors are not suitable for work in sunlight.

A crossflow cylinder head is a cylinder head that features the intake and exhaust ports on opposite sides. The gases can be thought to flow across the head. This is in contrast to reverse-flow cylinder head designs that have the ports on the same side.



A crossflow head gives better performance, but the popular explanation put forward for this — that the gases don t have to change direction and hence are moved into and out of the cylinder more efficiently — is a simplification since there is no continuous flow because of valve opening and closing. But since there is overlap between the intake and exhaust profiles there is a point in which both valves are open. At that point the inertia of the exhaust gases leaving the cylinder helps to aspirate the intake gases into the cylinder. The other main reason for a crossflow s performance is that the ports and valves can be larger and its physical separation of the hot exhaust manifold keeps the air in the intake manifold cooler. Most modern engines are of a crossflow design. The engineering terminology for these benefits is greater volumetric efficiency.



"Crossflow" is often used to refer specifically to Ford Motor Company s Kent Crossflow 4-cylinder OHV engine, and its short-block "Valencia" derivative which has been used in cars from the 1960s up to the present day, albeit with the addition of fuel injection and a modern engine management system. The term was also briefly used in the early 1980s in Australia for the revised 4.1 litre inline six-cylinder engine in Ford s Australian large family car, the Falcon. This was in response to the post-1979 fuel crisis where the Falcon was a comparatively fuel-inefficient car compared to its contemporary rivals.



This term is used for engines which have only one intake and one exhaust valve per cylinder; four (or five) valves per cylinder result in engines having superior performance sourced from total port size, rather than the relative location of the ports.
